New hangars planned for an air base in central Taiwan will be designed to withstand Chinese ballistic missile strikes, reports the Taipei Times.

Thirty-six hangars, to be built at Ching Chuan Kang Air Base in Taichung, would be able to survive being hit by Chinese Dongfeng ballistic missiles, air force chief Lt. Gen. Huang Chih-wei told lawmakers last week.

Experts from the Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology confirmed during a hearing on the fiscal 2023 defense budget that the hangars were designed to survive such missile strikes.

The new hangars were proposed in 2020 to protect aircraft in the event of a Chinese attack.

The project has a budget of US$136.5 million and is expected to be completed by 2026.

Design and risk assessment work is slated to be completed by the end of the year, after which construction will begin, said Huang.
