The German navy has successfully test-fired new precision-guided munitions, reports the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw).
During acceptance testing off the northern coast of Norway, the frigate Rheinland-Pfalz fired Leonardo 127-mm Vulcano long-range guided rounds at a target, the agency said
The rounds struck a few yards apart in the immediate vicinity of the target marker, according to the release.
Once approved for service, which is anticipated later this year, the procurement of the new rounds will follow. Procurement is expected to run through 2026.
The Vulcano 127 GLR (guided long-range) round purchased by Germany is designed to provide long-range, high-accuracy fire support against stationary and moving point targets and to engage moving surface ships, noted Naval News.
The precision-guided rounds are slated to be integrated with Germany’s Baden-Wurttemberg-class and planned F126 frigates.
