Slovenia has elected its first female president, reports the Slovenian Press Agency (STA).

On Sunday, Natasa Pirc Musar defeated former Foreign Minister Anze Logar in the presidential runoff election, securing 53.86 percent of the vote.

The 54-year-old former lawyer previously served two terms as Slovenia’s first information commissioner and several years as a news anchor.

She is not affiliated with a political party but was endorsed by the two largest parties in the parliamentary ruling coalition after their candidates were eliminated in the first round of voting as well as two former presidents.

Pirc Musar describes herself as a left-liberal and ran on a platform focused on human and constitutional rights, democracy and climate change.

She will formally take office from President Borut Pahor, who is concluding his second five-year term, on Dec. 23.
