L3Harris says it is investing in a private manufacturer of solar-powered autonomous surface vehicles (ASV) for military and commercial use.

The investment in SeaSatellites (San Diego, Calif.), will fuel collaborative development and speed production of the Seasats X3 micro-ASV, L3Harris said in a release on Wednesday.

The X3 offers a unique design and low-signature waterline that makes it difficult to detect by sight or radar. It also provides reliable six-month performance endurance in all weather conditions at a much lower cost than existing small ASVs, said L3Harris.

The Seasats ASV would also complement L3Harris’ existing medium and large ASV offerings, the company said.

The X3 can accommodate a variety of payloads for missions such as counter-piracy, mine-clearing, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and electronic warfare.
