The military government in Guinea has agreed to an Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) plan to restore civilian rule within two years, reports Agence France-Presse.
The junta, led by Col. Mamady Doumbouya, has been sanctioned over an initial three-year plan to transfer power.
Doumbouya overthrew President Alpha Conde in September 2021, who had been in power for more than a decade.
ECOWAS and Guinean experts developed a two-year timetable for a political transition, the regional organization said.
Doumbouya said the plan would enter effect on Jan. 1, 2023. The ECOWAS member states must approve schedule before it can officially enter force. The bloc is slated to hold a summit by the end of the year.
