The Japanese government is considering building an experimental submarine to evaluate sub-launched long-range missiles, reports the Yomiuri Shimbun (Tokyo).

The project is expected to be included in the annual National Defense Program Guidelines, which are scheduled to be revised by the end of the year.

Tokyo is seeking to increase its ability to conduct counterattacks against hostile targets such as missile launch sites.

If approved, construction of the experimental submarine could begin in 2024. It is expected to evaluate missile launches from torpedo tubes and vertical launch systems.

The government is expected make a decision on fielding such submarines following the testing.

Japan is in talks with the U.S. to buy Tomahawk cruise missiles, which could potentially be used by the new sub.
