The Ethiopian government and Tigrayan rebels have agreed to a cease-fire after a week of peace talks in South Africa, reports All Africa.
Representatives of the Ethiopian government and the Tigray Peoples’ Liberation Front (TPLF) have been meeting in Pretoria since Oct. 25 for African Union-mediated peace talks.
On Wednesday, the sides announced that they had reached a cease-fire agreement, including a “systematic, orderly, smooth and coordinated disarmament.”
The full text of the deal has not been made public.
In a joint statement, the sides reaffirmed their commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ethiopia, its constitution and a single national defense force.
Accordingly, the parties “agreed on a detailed program of disarmament, demobilization and reintegration for the TPLF combatants, taking into account the security situation on the ground,” said the statement.
The federal government also agreed to strengthen cooperation with humanitarian agencies to expedite aid to those in need.
A high-level African Union partner will be responsible for “monitoring, supervising and implementation” of the agreement, said former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, the A.U. high representative for the Horn of Africa, as cited by CNN.
