Anti-Mandatory Military Service Demonstration Mobilizes Online

250 protestors are expected in Riga on Saturday, marching in opposition to drafted legislation that would make military service mandatory, reports Baltic News Network (Latvia).

A draft of the National Defense Service law was passed by the Cabinet of Ministers on September 20 but has not yet been reviewed by the Saeima – Latvia’s unicameral legislature.

The group organizing opposition to the legislation, Rīko tikai tavējie, identify themselves as, “an informal group of active citizens,” but are otherwise anonymous.
