Al-Shabaab Attacks Military Base in Galmudug State

The Somali military says it has defeated a militant assault on one of its bases in the central Galmudug state, reports the Voice of America News.

The Al-Shabaab attack targeted a military base in the village of Qayib in the Galguduud region of the state during morning prayers.

The assault began with a car bombing and was followed by two hours of fighting between soldiers and the militants, local officials said.

The military told Somali government radio that the militants suffered heavy casualties.

Local media reported that 15 people were killed in the attack.

Al-Shabaab launched the assault a day after the Somali military said it had killed 200 militants over a four-day period.
