A recently published report says that Ethiopian guards and villagers killed 83 Tigrayan prisoners in an incident last year, reports the Voice of America News.
The previously unreported massacre took place on Nov. 21, 2021, at a camp in southern Ethiopia near the town of Mirab Abaya, reported the Washington Post.
Witnesses said that guards opened fire on the prisoners, causing many to flee into the bush pursued by Ethiopian soldiers.
After running for an hour, some escapees sought help from locals but were attacked by a mob of around 150 people with machetes, sticks and stones.
The mob had been incorrectly informed that the Tigrayans were prisoners of war who were responsible for the deaths of local soldiers, said witnesses.
None of the fatalities were combatants who had fought Ethiopian forces, the report says.
The bodies of the 83 Tigrayans were buried in a mass grave outside the camp.
The Post called the incident “deadliest killing of imprisoned soldiers since the Tigray war started.”
