The lead boat in Turkey's new class of diesel-electric attack submarines has begun sea trials, reports the Naval News.

On Tuesday, the Piri Reis was seen undertaking initial sea trials in the Sea of Marmara.

The sub is the first of six in the class planned for delivery by 2027.

The Piri Reis class will be the first in Turkish service equipped with air-independent propulsion (AIP) systems, running on Howaldswerke-Deutsche Werft fuel cells.

ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems has been building the subs at Turkey’s Golcuk Shipyard.

The boats can carry heavyweight torpedoes, anti-ship missiles and mines.
