BAE Systems has begun testing a large barge that will be used to launch a new frigate later this year, reports the U.K. Defence Journal.
The Glasgow, the first Type 26 frigate for the British Royal Navy, will be rolled onto the CD01 semi-submersible barge, which will then carry the ship to deeper waters for launch.
The barge underwent testing last week ahead of the planned launch.
Barge is a joint project by the Malin Group, a naval engineering firm, and the Augustea shipbuilding company.
The CD01 is one of the largest submersible barges in Europe, capable of accommodating vessels and cargo with drafts of up to 40 feet (12 m) and lengths of more than 450 feet (137 m).
The barge measures 450-feet (137-m) long, with a beam of 120 feet (36.6 m), and a deck area of 45,000 square feet (4,200 square m).
